I belive modal verbs should be the first words everyone learn in the new language. They allow you to build first sentences and … your confidence! Learn these 10 Polish modal verbs by heart. Write them down and create your own sentences. You can add them in the comment section if you want me to correct them 🙂 

BYĆ – to be

*this verb is used to create future tense of imperfect verbs

Present: jestem, jesteś, jest, jesteśmy, jesteście, są

Future: będę, będziesz, będzie, będziemy, będziecie, będą

Gdzie jesteś? Where are you?

Byłem w domu. I was at home.

Jutro będę w pracy. I will be at work tomorrow.

MIEĆ – to have (also to be supposed to be)

mam, masz, ma, mamy, macie, mają

Mam 20 lat. I’m 20.

Miałem dwa koty. I had two cats.

Będę mieć duży dom. I will have a big house.

Miałam dzisiaj być na imprezie, ale muszę zostać w domu. I was supposed to be at a party today but I need to stay home.

MÓC – to be able to/ to be allowed to

mogę, możesz, może, możemy, możecie, mogą

Mogę spotkać się z tobą wieczorem. I can meet you in the evening.

Nie mogłem zrobić pracy domowej. I couldn’t do my homework.

Za 2 dni będę mógł znowu biegać. I’ll be able to run in two days.

UMIEĆ to know how

umiem umiesz, umie, umiemy, umiecie, umieją

Umiesz śpiewać? Can you sing?

Kiedy byłam dzieckiem, umiałam jeździć na rowerze. When I was a child I could ride a bike.

POTRAFIĆ to know how = umieć

potrafię potrafisz, potrafi, potrafimy, potraficie, potrafią

Nie potrafię rysować.  I can’t draw.

Oni potrafią organizować dobre wycieczki. Then know how to organize good trips.

POTRZEBOWAĆ need (+ Genitive)

*don’t use it with verbs

potrzebuję potrzebujesz, potrzebuje, potrzebujemy, potrzebujecie, potrzebują

Potrzebuję czekolady, bo jestem smutna. I need chocolate because I’m sad.

Wstałam bardzo wcześnie i potrzebowałam kawy. I woke up early and I needed a coffee.

MUSIEĆ to have to / to must

muszę, musisz, musi, musimy musicie, muszą

Musimy porozmawiać. We need to talk.

Musiałam wyjść wcześniej z pracy. I needed to leave work earlier.

POWINIEN     should                                                                         

* this verb doesn’t have an infinitive and it’s forms are different for masculine and feminine subjects

powinienem (m) / powinnam (f), powinieneś (m) / powinnaś (f)

Powinienem iść do szkoły z gorączką? Should I go to school with a fever?

Wczoraj powinniśmy byli zostać w domu. Yesterday we should have stayed at home.

WOLEĆ to prefer

wolę, wolisz, woli, wolimy, wolicie, wolą

Wolę czereśnie niż truskawki. I prefer sweet cherries to strawberries.

Wolisz zieloną czy czarną herbatę? Do you prefer green or black tea?

CHCIEĆ  to want

chcę, chcesz, chce, chcemy, chcecie, chcą

Chcesz kawałek czekoladowego ciasta? Do you want a piece of a chocolate cake?

Chcemy spędzić wakacje w domu. We want to spend the holidays at home.
